WHEELCHAIR
DONATIONS
What would Denzil have done without you –
Mr Brett Gage?
Wheelchair donation from Brett Gage (Chairman:
Clarins) helps Denzil David
Denzil David works as a Project Coordinator for BARRIER
BREAKERS. Denzil’s wheelchair broke and he was in
dire need of one. How could BARRIER BREAKERS do their Accessibility
Audits without Denzil?
Through the generosity of Brett Gage, Denzil is now once
more able, not only to carry on with his own normal day-to-day
activities, but also able to fulfil his important function
at BARRIER BREAKERS. Thank you Brett Gage.
Below are pictures that capture the moment when Johan Coetzer-Liversage
of Mr Wheelchair (www.mrwheelchair.co.za)
personally delivered Denzil’s wheelchair to him. Faith
Sibiya, APD Chief Social Worker, who facilitated the donation,
was on hand to ensure everything was as Mr Gage had wanted.

With the kind support of very generous donors, the APD
has been instrumental in providing assistive devices to
many thousands of people with physical disabilities during
the last seven decades…

AFRICA
When Dawn Laws decided to conquer Mt Kilimanjaro in 2005,
she also decided to make this more than just a personal
barrier breaking experience, so she secured several sponsors
who each made a contribution to her Wheelchairs for Africa
fund. This money is being used by the APD to provide assistive
devices to worthy recipients thus fulfilling Dawn’s
dream to help others overcome their own barriers.

MUZI POOE TRUST FUND
The
confidence the Committee of Mzimhlope Orlando West (Soweto)
had in Muzi Pooe when they set up a special fund for him
has definitely paid off. This young man has attained many
remarkable achievements in his life, the most recent being…
APD 2005 ACHIEVER OF THE
YEAR’S MOST INSPIRING SILENT MESSAGE: NEVER GIVE UP!
Muzikayise Pooe, Muzi as he is commonly known, has been
a service recipient of APD Greater Johannesburg since 1989.
During his interaction with Osborn Mthimkulu, the social
worker of APD, Muzi always expressed his ambition to be
a successful musician. Osborn encouraged Muzi to pursue
this goal and also helped him to acquire a computer, which
he has utilised to create music.
Osborn also guided Muzi with regard to planning, setting
goals, decision making as well as problem solving. This
support provided Muzi with emotional strength to withstand
and overcome the challenges posed by his adverse living
circumstances.
Eventually Muzi’s determination and tenacity paid
off as he was victorious in the Soloist division of a music
competition organised by the Southern African Disabled Musicians
Association (SADMA). This achievement resulted in him being
offered an opportunity to record his music.
In summing up Muzi’s success, Osborn comments: “It
should give us all courage to hold on to our dreams and
never give up regardless of whatever odds we come across.”
