PROTECTIVE WORKSHOPS: WHERE WE WAGE WAR AGAINST UNEMPLOYMENT

The next time you need hands, lots of hands, for that rush job, think of us and give us a call.

The APD would be failing in its duty to help people with physical disabilities to lead independent lives if it did not consider the facilitation of employment opportunities as part of its responsibilities.

Because of this, the APD supports five Protective Workshops which provide direct employment opportunities for 360 people. The income they generate contributes towards sustaining their 1 800 dependants.

These workshops offer a safe, disabled-friendly environment where people with disabilities from the local community can develop skills and earn an income to supplement their disability pensions which is presently R840 per month.

Many of the workshops also offer day care for the more profoundly disabled. This provides them with an environment where they can interact socially with their peers while undertaking tasks geared to their specific limitations.
Various activities, at an estimated contract value of between R500 000 and R600 000 per annum, take place in the workshops.

“Our workshops,” says Director David Fox, “are particularly good at doing high volume, low skill work. And this we can do at extremely competitive rates. We are able to undertake
